I’ve had a few questions the last few weeks about how to keep the fire burning through the current pandemic and restricted situation we find ourselves in as athletes. We may have no clear race goals and question marks surround the next opportunity to race.
The main priority is to hold your momentum. Train for the psychological benefits rather than the physiological and both will be rewarded.
So what can I do?
-
- Keep moving, Keep it mostly easy, Keep it enjoyable.
I feel doing these 3 things will help keep you mentally and physically in check and when things start coming back towards normality with races appearing on the horizon you will be in a good position to increase your training load. - Don’t stress too much about training zones, pace or power.
- Change the modality or mode of exercise.
This can provide a great mental refresh. It may be a Hike, Mountain Bike, Row or some additional strength training. Don’t be afraid to change. The main thing is that it is something you enjoy.
- Keep moving, Keep it mostly easy, Keep it enjoyable.
Physiologically our bodies will still gain a lot of the central system (heart and lungs) adaptations and gains regardless of sport type. So have no guilt about how you increase your breathing rate and heart rate. As long as this is occurring gains will be made.
Following these simple guidelines will help you be mentally and physically ready to increase your training load when the time is right.
Keep safe,
Sean
